The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office completed the criminal investigation regarding Marina Tauber and the "Șor" Political Party

CHIȘINĂU - The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office has finished the criminal investigation regarding Marina Tauber and the legal entity, the "Șor" Political Party, accused of four charges for falsifying reports on the financing of the electoral campaign and the political party and accepting illegal financing from an organized criminal group (art. 30, 42 par. (2), 45, 181 2 par. (1), art. 30, 42 par. (3), 45, 181 2 par. (5), art. 42 par. (2) ), 45, 181 2 par. (1) and articles 30, 42 par. (3), 45, 181 2 par. (5) of the Criminal Code).

The criminal investigation body of the National Anticorruption Center began the investigation in January 2022. 

According to the administered evidence, prosecutors allege that, Marina Tauber participating as a candidate designated by the "Șor" Political Party for the position of mayor of the municipality of Balti, in the electoral campaign of November 21, 2021, intentionally and in prior agreement with the treasurer of the party, acting at the urging and in strict coordination with the organized criminal group led by Ilan Şor, received from the organized criminal group funds in the amount of 9,752,000 lei (appx. 509,971 Euro), of which the amount of 740,464.50 lei, she introduced falsely in the manner of donation forms on behalf of 104 natural persons who in reality did not donate this amount of money, false data which she entered in the reports on the financial management of the electoral campaigns, by substituting, hiding the identity of the donors, the volume of accumulated funds and used, and later she personally signed the reports and registered them with the Central Electoral Commission.

In addition, Tauber is also charged with knowingly accepting the funding as an electoral candidate from an organized criminal group, during the new local elections for the position of mayor of Balti municipality on November 21, 2021 in the amount of 9,752,000 lei (appx. 509,971 Euro).

Furthermore, Marina Tauber is also accused of knowingly accepting the financing of the political party, from the organized criminal group led by Ilan Şor, in the total amount of 195,518,013 lei (appx. 10,224,421 Euro), illicit financial sources that were integrated into the activity and maintenance of the party, in order to promote and realize the interests of the organized criminal group in the political arena of the Republic of Moldova, to seize power in the state.

On May 26, 2023, the deputies of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova approved the requests of the interim Prosecutor General regarding the lifting of Marina Taubers parliamentary immunity on three charges, depriving her of parliamentary immunity. Previously, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova approved the lifting of immunity on the fourth charge in July 2022.

At this stage, the materials of the criminal case will be presented to the accused and their lawyers, and, after their requests and motions will be resolved, the criminal case will be sent to court.

We mention that, on May 29, 2023, the Chișinău Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the Chișinău Court, Ciocana headquarters, by which the preventive measure of house arrest was extended for a period of 20 days regarding Marina Tauber.

Note: A person accused of committing a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court decision.
